Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold 10.00 to 15.00 lower. Locally some barns reported cattle as much as 20.00 lower. The largest declines were noted on light weight steer calves under 550 lbs. The supply of feeders was light. At this time many producers have chosen not to market cattle with the volatility and uncertainty around the industry, however some have been holding them for a few weeks already and can’t wait any longer or need some cash flow and are without any options but too market. Just in the last 30 days light weight steers have lost near 30.00 per hundred weight (or 150.00 to 175.00 per head) in value, at the time of year when those weights typically see some of the highest demand of the year. Boxed beef cutouts skyrocketed this week, compared to last Friday choice was up 41.73 at 249.87 and select was up 39.08 at 241.06 as of Thursdays close. Volume was also extremely high and likely record setting with 1028 loads of cuts trimmings and grinds reported in just the first 4 days of the week. To provide some kind of perspective, volume for the same full week one year ago was 478 loads. Feedlot sales this week also showed very good negotiated volume as of Thursday 146,217 head were confirmed sold so far for the week. Sales begin to be reported very early on Monday near the lower side of last week’s clean up sales but as this week went on most live sales were steady to 2.00 higher at 110.00-112.00 live and steady on the dressed side with the bulk of last week’s market at 175.00. Heavy demand for product and margins that may also exceed the records set last fall had packers pulling cattle bought for later deliveries early as they work to keep chains moving at good speeds in order to try and keep up with product demand. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 1568 head with a weighted average weight of 542.28 lbs. and a price value of 145.54, which is 12.97 lower than last Friday.
