Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower, virtually erasing all of last week’s market gains. Feeder supply and demand was light to moderate. Early week optimism quickly eroded on news of the coronavirus spreading to Europe. Fears that sent the stock markets tumbling spread to the Ag sector and specifically in the cattle industry. There is concern about exports as weekly numbers are the lowest so far this year and domestic worries whether or not consumers will continue to eat out or begin to stay at home. Rains and some winter weather brought mud back to the farms and producers quickly decided not to market cattle this week making for light supplies at most barns buy mid-week. As of this report on Friday morning, minus the Feb Live cattle contract set to expire today, feeder and live cattle contracts for all months are down about 10.00 for the week. Feedlot sales are mostly done for the week, sales begin early in the week and at least some volume was reported about everyday but the market lost ground and feed yards were having to accept less money each day. Live sales fell mostly in the range of 112.00-115.00 and dressed sales 180.00-187.00, with all the highs seen earlier in the week. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed as of Thursday close choice was actually up .45 cents at 205.54, select was down 2.01, compared to last Friday. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 5205 head with a weighted average weight of 552.89 lbs. and a price value of 161.59, 9.38 lower than last Friday.
