Compared to last week, feeder steers sold steady to 4.00 higher, heifers 400-700 lbs. sold steady to 2.00 higher, a much lighter test of feather weights and heavy yearlings sold steady to 3.00 lower. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. Once again many sales were impacted by another round of winter weather that came mid-week resulting in some barns seeing light runs or canceling sales altogether. Demand for feeders is moderate. The steer heifer discount is once again getting wide with some weight breaks seeing heifers back as much as 25.00 with 15.00-20.00 being common. It generally does not take buyers long to notice this and bring spreads back to closer levels. Many farmers prefer to graze steers and spring demand is typically always greater steers but if spreads get to wide attitudes can change quickly when potential profits for heifers looks more appealing. Feedlot sales have been mostly untested this week. As of this report only a very small handful have sold which were 1.00 to 2.00 lower but not really enough for a good market test at this point. Boxed beef cutouts are down for the week, choice closed Thursday at 210.93 down 2.07 and select at 205.96 down 4.70 compared to last Friday. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 5058 head with a weighted average weight of 560.98 lbs. and a price value of 161.13, 2.45 higher than last Friday.
