Compared to last week, feeders under 650 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher, heavier weight feeders sold mostly steady to 2.00 lower. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. Weather played a big part in hampering receipts this week. Snow and lots of rain last weekend led to very muddy conditions early week then more rain, sleet, and snow settling over the state as of the writing of this report made livestock transportation less than ideal. The offering was made up of mid weight cattle with only a small percentage of heavy yearlings or feather weight calves in the offering. The steer/heifer discount was noticeable but unlikely to last long as buyers pick up on that and it seems to self-correct pretty quickly. Feedlot sales developed on Thursday. Live sales were reported steady to 1.00 lower from 123.00-125.00 and dressed sales were steady to 2.00 lower from 198.00-200.00. The last two weeks packers saw margins decline and according to the sterling beef tracker reached the lowest level in two years. For the week ending Jan 10th packers showed profit margins of 25.00 per head and feed yards were at 146.00 per head. A huge shift from the record spread set back in Sept when the packer/feeder spread was at 618.00 per head in the packers favor. Boxed beef cut outs closed Thursday with a very narrow choice/select spread of 1.43. Choice closed Thursday at 212.57 up 2.48 and select at 211.19 up 4.64 compared to the closes last Friday. The opening report on Friday morning had the spread down to only .54 cents. The Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 5839 head with a weighted average weight of 554.28 lbs. and a price value of 161.86, 1.37 higher than last Friday.
