Compared to last week, steers and heifer calves steady to 5.00 higher, yearlings mostly steady. The feeder supply was heavy, with the first full week of the year and sale barns getting back into the swing of things. Demand was good to very good as several reporters noted reputation cattle coming through the ring. Mild temperatures and agreeable weather through the week allowed for easy transportation of cattle to town. The calendar may read January, but buyers are already planning for spring and having calves to turn onto pasture, which seems to happen earlier year after year. There have been a few negotiated cash sales, but overall it has been pretty quiet this week. Some live sales were reported at 123.00 to 125.00 and some dressed from 197.00 to 199.00. Boxed beef cutouts closed Thursday at 209.96 and 206.68, for Choice and Select, respectively. For the week, Choice cuts are up 1.47 and Select cuts are 1.29 higher, as of Thursday’s close. The Choice/Select spread continues to narrow, as it has been for the last couple of months. The Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 12,991 head with a weighted average weight of 551.48 lbs and a price value of 160.49, 0.05 lower than last Friday.
