Missouri reported 414 priced lines covering 41,578 head across feeder cattle, slaughter cattle, replacement cattle. USDA puts feeder cattle receipts at 47,077 head. slaughter cattle receipts at 3,813 head. replacement cattle receipts at 3,367 head. Counted as USDA files them — 469 of those are cow-calf pairs, each counted once.

Compared to two weeks ago, calves sold steady to 5.00 higher with some spots of 8.00 higher on better quality weaned calves with health programs behind them. Yearlings sold steady to 3.00 higher. The supply was heavy after many barns were closed last week for the holiday. Several of the auctions around the state held specials in conjunction with normal weekly auctions so there was a very good showing of cattle with all the proper paperwork that were met with good demand. Farmers across the state are dealing with a lot of mud, as temperatures have warmed up and allowed the ground to thaw. This has several feeders showing up at barns with a little mud on them. It’s also providing a little challenge as many farmers have spring calves penned up for weaning and feeding over winter with plans to sell after the start of the New Year. These conditions are neither good for health or weight gains. In other news, this week was the reopening of the plant in Holcomb, Kansas following the fire back in Aug which caused so much chaos in the markets. As of this report, only a very small handful of feedlot sales have taken place at 119.00 live and 187.00-189.00 dressed which would be steady to firm, following the stronger markets that developed last week. As of Thursday’s close, boxed beef cutouts are lower compared to last Friday. The Choice value has dropped sharply down 7.62 at 225.60 Select is down 2.22 at 208.12. The Choice/Select spread closed Thursday at 17.48. The Choice/Select spread has been narrowing the past month with the spread a month ago around 27.00. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 12,841 head with a weighted average weight of 551.53 lbs. and a price value of 153.40, which is 7.43 higher than last Friday.
