Compared to last week, steers and heifers mostly steady to 3.00 lower. However, weaned calves with good condition continued to bring a premium to their unweaned, fleshy counterparts. There have been an abundance of calves coming to sale barns, putting some pressure on the calf market. Buyers are putting calves out to graze on wheat fields and pastures, if they have any. Others are headed to the feedlots. The latest Cattle on Feed report will be released this afternoon. USDA’s Livestock Slaughter October report was released November 21. It showed total cattle slaughter for the U.S. in October was 2.9763 million head, slightly above last year’s number of 2.9595 million head. The average live weight was only three pounds lower at 1,360 pounds. Steer and heifer slaughter was slightly lower as well, at 2.281 million head. There has been a steady flow of cull cows being sent to market. In the fat cattle market, live purchases have been mostly consistent in the 115.00 to 117.00 range and dressed purchases from 181.00 to 184.00. The futures market has been making small adjustments this week, with Live Cattle Futures closing on Thursday 0.40 lower to 0.22 higher than last Friday and Feeder Cattle Futures 0.73 to 1.67 lower. Boxed beef cutouts closed on Thursday at 234.86 for Choice and 213.86 for Select, 3.35 and 0.91 lower, respectively. That is 5.94 and 0.47 lower for Choice and Select, respectively, when comparing to last Friday. Most of the loss in Choice cuts was from Thursday, closing 3.35 lower than Wednesday. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 7815 head with a weighted average weight of 546.90 lbs and a price value of 150.40, 2.58 lower than last Friday.
