Missouri reported 309 priced lines covering 15,444 head across feeder cattle, slaughter cattle, replacement cattle. USDA puts feeder cattle receipts at 17,569 head. slaughter cattle receipts at 1,971 head. replacement cattle receipts at 1,363 head. Counted as USDA files them — 163 of those are cow-calf pairs, each counted once.

Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. Many producers have continued to hold off on marketing cattle following the disruption in the industry since the processing plant fire about a month ago. Good pasture conditions with plenty of green grass has made this an easier decision. Temperatures have also been well above average the last couple of weeks which has also not been very favorable for moving livestock. The supply showing up at the barns is starting to make a shift as yearlings are becoming harder to find and more of the supply is being made up of new crop calves. As October or as many feedlot managers call it national sick calf month approaches the discounts for unweaned calves will become much larger due to health risk. The monthly cattle on feed report is due out on Friday afternoon. Numbers in all three of the tracked areas are projected to be lower. The placement number of course having the widest spread in the pre report estimates. Given that we know many producers have just been holding off on marketing cattle though this number shouldn’t be mistaken as false hope as these cattle will come to the market at some point soon. Another note is the estimated number of cattle on feed which is expected to be below year ago numbers for the first time since Dec of 2016. Boxed beef cutouts compared to last Friday were lower again this week choice closed Thursday at 218.17 down 2.71 and select 192.16 which was 6.44 lower. Feedlot sales so far this week did gain a bit of ground with live sales reported at 100.00-101.00 and dressed at 160.00-162.00. The gap between feed lot losses and packers profits exceeded 600.00 in the latest Sterling Profit Tracker, with feed lots at 203.04 in the red and packers showing 415.66 in the black. Fridays Missouri stocker formula consisted of 2919 head with a weighted average of 545.84 lbs. and a price value of 148.31, 1.27 higher than last Friday.
