Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves steady to 3.00 higher, yearlings steady to firm. Demand and supply moderate. The feeder cattle market has tried to recover prices the last couple of weeks, but with the fed cattle market having difficulty finding a footing, there is some question to what the future holds. Packer margins continue to be very high. According to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker, packer margins were just shy of $500 per head for the week ending August 23. The margins are increased due to the cash fed cattle market being lower, because of the uncertainty of if the industry has the capacity to keep up with demand. However, livestock slaughter has continued to be strong and numbers have not tapered off at all after the plant fire in Kansas. Midweek, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue ordered an investigation into packer margins and practices, due to the recent spike in margins. The latest Cattle on Feed report was released last Friday with On Feed at 100 percent, Placements 2 percent lower, and Marketings 7 percent higher. This is the fifth consecutive month that the On Feed inventory is the largest since 1996, when the data series began. Iowa/Minnesota had some live sales from 107.00 to 109.00, some early week at 110.00, and dressed sales from 170.00 to 175.00. Nebraska live sales were at 105.00 to 108.00 live and 165.00 to 175.00 dressed, the bulk at 170.00 to 175.00. A break in the hot weather came this week with some cooler weather, rain, and storms. Pasture conditions and water supplies are in great shape. According to the latest Missouri Crop Progress report, 86 percent is categorized as adequate to surplus and 99 percent of stock water supply is categorized as adequate to surplus. In corn condition, 73 percent is rated fair to good and 79 percent of the state’s soybeans are rated fair to good. Both corn and soybean progress are trailing last year’s and the five year average progress by quite a margin, with 84 percent of corn in the dough stage, 43 percent dented, 88 percent of soybeans are blooming, and 65 percent have set pods. Boxed beef cutouts closed on Thursday at 232.19 and 212.78 for Choice and Select, respectively. That is 5.33 lower for Choice and 0.07 higher for Select, than last Friday. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 3522 head with a weighted average weight of 556.17 lbs and a price value of 154.27, 0.42 lower than last Friday.
