Compared to last week feeders sold steady to 2.00 higher on a very light offering. The supply of feeders was light with receipts lower than any normal marketing week in memory. Between heat indices in the triple digits and a wide spread overwhelming feeling of disgust with the current situation following last week’s events farmers were very unmotivated to move cattle this week. Pasture conditions continue to be better than average and most farmers have adequate amounts of grass making it an easier decision to hold cattle for a few extra weeks. Much unlike last year when both feed and water was very short. The boxed beef cutouts as of Thursday’s close showed only mild gains after last week’s record movement in value. Choice closed on Thursday at 239.28 up .59 from last Friday and select closed at 215.91 up 2.65. Packer margins soared last week with the lower cost of fed cattle and the record increase in product value, moving to over 350.00 per head according to the Sterling Profit Tracker. Even with the Tyson plant being offline following the fire now two weeks ago, weekly livestock slaughter ended up being larger than the week prior as packers shuffled cattle and ran chains on Saturday. Feedlots saw margins slip into the red and managers are once again losing money with each animal that gets on the truck. Feedlot sales have been limited this week, live sales reported from 108.00-110.00 and dressed at 170.00-178.00. The monthly cattle on feed report is due out after close of business on Friday. Pre-report estimates have on feed number about even with a year ago, marketed up about 6% and placements being the wild card with a big range of estimates but average being about a .5 percent under last year’s level. Nearby futures markets as of this report are higher for the week gaining back a small portion of last week’s losses. Farther out live cattle futures are slightly higher, feeder contracts are mixed. Friday’s Missouri stocker formula consisted of 1320 head with a weighted average weight of 549.13 lbs. and a price value of 154.69 which is 5.63 higher than last Friday.
