Compared to last week, feeder steers sold 5.00 to mostly 10.00 lower and feeder heifers sold fully 10.00 to spots of 13.00 lower. The supply of feeders was light as events with in the Ag sector brought much uncertainty resulting in many producers deciding to hold off on marketing feeders. A few barns even cancelled sales due to poor marketing conditions and light demand. As last week drew to an end there was some volatility expected as USDA was set to dump a large amount of grain data and reports on Monday. Pre report chatter showed just how much that no one really had any idea what might be reviled in these reports given the unusual growing season this year and surprises which have come with reports so far this year. Monday ended up being no different as corn data, which is of the most interest to the cattle sector, showed a reduction in expected acres but an increase in yield. This caused cash grain bids and futures to tumble. As of this report the September corn futures price is down about 45 points for the week. Normally lower feed cost would seem like a good thing for the cattle industry and that is true, but USDA reports was not the only unexpected news this week. Late Friday night brought news of a major fire to the Holcomb meat processing plant owned by Tyson Foods. This plant is a major piece of the beef supply chain accounting for 5-6 percent (30-35,000 head per week) of the total fed cattle slaughter each week. Knee jerk reactions occurred before the smoke was clear and cattle futures opened Monday limit down and never moved. Losses continued through mid-week before gaining back some ground. As of this report live cattle futures are down about 7.00 to 8.00 for the week and feeder futures are around 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Boxed beef cutouts sky rocketed on supply fears with choice closing Thursday at 236.12, up 19.75 compared to last Friday and select at 210.67, up 17.86. Despite fears of feedlots backing up and shortages of beef supplies in the store weekly livestock slaughter showed other plants have been able to absorb most of the cattle supply as Thursday’s slaughter numbers showed only a decrease of about 10-12,000 head compared to same point a week and a year ago. Fed cattle prices dropped sharply this week as well. Only limited sales have been reported so far this week with live prices 105.00-107.00 (approx. 8.00 lower) and dressed sales 165.00-172.00 (approx. 13.00-15.00 lower). Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 1772 head with a weighted average weight of 556.01 lbs. and a price value of 149.06, 7.01 lower than last Friday.
