Compared to last week: Slaughter steers and heifers 2.00 to 4.00 lower, Holstein steers 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Moderate demand for steers and heifers. There were plenty of high grading steers and heifers offered, but packers were determined to buy them lower and that is just what they did. Weighing conditions were fairly full, hides continue to be dirty to very dirty at times, few clean cattle. The weather has warmed and the snow has melted and the frost is starting to come out of the ground which has made for muddy feedyard pen conditions, today's cattle were showing the effects of this as most carried .5 to 1 percent of their weight as tag. Estimated dressed cost this week looked to run from 182.00-186.00. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower, full decline on the Breaker cows as there was a heavy supply of these fleshy, fat cows. No good comparison available for bulls.
Slaughter lambs 2.00 to 5.00 lower, Slaughter ewes steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder lambs not well tested. Good demand for slaughter lambs, very good demand for slaughter ewes, moderate demand for the few feeder lambs offered as most continue to go to slaughter accounts. Light to moderate demand for bred ewes. The bred ewe market has found support from the high price of the slaughter ewes not from an abundance of buyers wanting a bred ewe.
