Reporter comment USDA

As filed

Compared to last week: steers 800 lbs to 999 lbs were mostly steady with instances of $4.00 higher; heifers from 800 lbs to 999 lbs were steady to instances of $2.00 higher. Several long strings of reputation cattle for today's sale made for a very active market. Most of the yearlings were in light flesh condition as they were straight off dry pastures. There were a lot of consignments of tested open heifers giving heifer buyers the opportunity to put loads of front end heifers together. A large crowd of people were in attendance with several farmer feeders competing with order buyers to get cattle bought. Some areas around here have received a little rain in the past week, over all pasture conditions remain extremely short. The spring calves in todays sale were right off the cow and most had received two rounds of shots. Calves were met with good buyer interest, with best demand for those bigger front end calves. One consigner told this market reporter that his open replacement heifer brought ten percent more this year than last year. With the increase in operating expense for producers it is nice to see a small increase in feeder cattle prices. The next feeder sale is Friday, September 10th, expecting a large run of yearlings as well as some spring calves. Stay Safe and Eat Beef!
