Today marked the 2nd and final day of the annual Blue Ribbon bred cow special. The stands were packed with bidders and buyers throughout both days long sale. Demand was mostly moderate to good for heavy offerings. Several ranches dispersed cows this year as drought conditions forced ranchers to do so. Cows off dispersions, where ranchers or order buyers know they are getting front end cattle, sold with a solid premium over the past couple days. Many order buyers were on hand with orders for cows to ship all over the country. Many sets of cows are destined for the southern plains or the corn-belt as demand for cows to stay in state was light. Quality over the last two days was mostly average to very attractive as many ranchers sold way into their herds due to drought conditions. Bred heifers sold on mostly good to very good demand for light to moderate offerings. Most heifers were in light flesh. The best demand for heifers was for AI bred and heifers that calve in a tight calving window. Demand for May and later calving cows was mostly good this year. Many ranchers have moved calving dates back due to difficult winters and heavy death loss. Additionally, demand for calves suitable to develop into yearlings has been very good over the past few years which has helped improve demand for later calving cows. 3rd trimester is from today to March 15, 2nd trimester is March 15 to June 16th, 1st trimester is after June 17th.
