Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-700 lbs sold mostly steady with several strings of thin/Fancy steers selling with a sharply higher advance, 750-850 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on limited comparisons from last week with 890-935 lb selling steady. Heifer calves weighing 450-600 lbs traded unevenly steady as overall numbers and quality were not as plentiful as last week, 600-650 lbs and 700-750 lbs sold steady. Demand was good on a moderate to heavy supply as buyers again this week were geared up for battle especially on the thin/fancy steer calves weighing 500-650 lbs and yearling steers weighing 750-850 lbs. Stick out sales included 83 hd thin/fancy steers 518 lbs at 561.00, 47 hd thin steers 613 lbs at 468.50, 71 steers 696 lbs at 407.00, 142 hd steers 761 lbs at 392.00 and pot load steers 808 lbs 375.00. USDA January crop production report was released and surprisingly bearish for corn as March corn closed down 24 cents and May corn down 23 cents as corn yield came in at 186.5 bpa increasing stocks and increase harvest acres. Feeder Cattle contracts closed with solid gains on the front three months from 1.30-1.47. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 lower.
