Compared to last week, steers calves sold 2.00 to 8.00 lower and heifer calves sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Not enough yearlings for an adequate market comparison. Slaughter cow sold mostly steady except lean cows sold 2.00 higher and slaughter bulls sold 4.00 higher. Quite a few thin and young cows went back to feed. Demand for fresh bawlers was moderate to good. Buyers continue to seek calves with fall precondition shots. But top-quality cattle with eye appeal outweighs the shot records. Several consignments coming in lighter than last year as most calves had little forage to consume all summer. Ranchers relied on maternal and paternal genetics (EPD's) they have selected in the last decade to help calves perform in years like this. If mother nature could have given a tick of rain mid-summer weaning weight could have met expectations. Unseasonal cold temps have made their way across the state. Some areas have received snow in the last few days hindering last efforts to bale alfalfa and other forages. Producers are still hopeful next weeks mid 50's temps will prevail and dry forages enough to bale.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
