Compared to last week: Feeder steers unevenly steady, heifers 2.00 to 7.00 higher. Very good demand this week for steers and heifers, as cash fed cattle soared to 265.00 by midweek, yet volatility in the futures contracts made for concern. Turnout time has arrived and many auction markets on their summer schedules, outside of special feeder cattle sales, weekly offerings are declining rapidly. Cattle feeders that need to buy cattle are facing much competition as the strength of the current fat market is creating very active markets at the auction, but the back months of the Live Cattle futures aren't at profitable levels. Great demand for heifers that are big enough to make replacement heifers, drought in the southern half of the state is causing some producers to make changes already though. Widespread rain over the weekend brought some relief.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
