Compared to last week: More limited feeder cattle offerings as many auction markets move to their bi-weekly summer schedules, feeder steers and heifers sold unevenly steady. Very good demand for light fall calves to background and for yearlings to go right into finishing yards. The cash fed cattle started to trade higher, up to 244.00 but then at late week sales of 238.00-240.00 surfaced and the futures contracts posted large losses on Friday. There is much optimism amongst cattle producers regardless of where the futures contracts are at as the market reached highs that most did not think could be achieved. The cash market has outperformed the futures and continues to do so, causing producers to pay little attention to it. Cattle are turned out to grass and auction receipts are light, except when a special BBQ sale is held offering long strings of backgrounded steers and heifers. The market is very active as cattle feeders know they need to act quick or they will not get the cattle bought that they need. Corn is growing nicely and pastures are in decent shape, looking positive for a fruitful growing season.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
