Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 6.00 to 10.00 higher. Very good demand for steers and heifers after the rise in the fat cattle market a week ago and the continued rise this week. The market was very active for lightweight cattle to background, either in a yard or on grass, it was also very active for those cattle bound for finishing yards. There was some rain across the state this week, bringing much needed relief to dry areas, yet some areas are still very dry. Yearling operators are ready to compete very heavily to buy the light cattle they still need to turn out on grass. As the week went on and a few reports of 218.00 for fat cattle surfaced, with most still holding for more money, there was even more optimism breathed into the feeder market. The futures contracts have been at a discounted level to the cash markets for so long in the northern plains, now with the summer months coming and those contract months are at 204.00-208.00, there is great hope that the basis will stay positive. The current cash market is now 15.00 to 20.00 higher than where the April contract was all winter long. The cattle bought during the winter look to make so much more money than what was projected at the time they were placed. These facts are what are causing the feeder cattle market to continue to rise to levels that many thought weren't possible. We are now entering the time of year where feeder cattle supplies become limited and cattle feeders want to get cattle bought now. Farmer feeders had a good window to get corn planted before the rain on Thursday, many took advantage of that window and got a lot planted already. More rain in the forecast for the coming week and warmer temps helping to get the growing season going.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
