Compared to last week: Feeder steers 3.00 to 6.00 higher, instances to 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. Very good demand for all weights of feeder steers, in spite of the -20 degree temps throughout much of the week. Cattle producers were quick to get their cattle to town, regardless of the cold weather, as they want to capitalize on the high feeder cattle market. Cash fed cattle at 198.00 to 201.00 did not deter cattle feeders from chasing the feeder cattle market higher. More heifers of replacement weight and quality were offered this week, very good demand for these heifers as spring is rapidly approaching. Cash fed cattle dipped lower, towards convergence with the Feb CME Live Cattle contract, April is lower yet at 193.90. Cattle feeders are paying little attention to lower futures markets. Some feeder cattle producers did decide to wait out the weather this week and rescheduled their consignments for next week when the temps will soar up to 50 degrees.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
