South Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary

USDA Livestock, Poultry & Grain Market News · Federal-State Market News Service, Sioux Falls, SD (LS-SF)
Feeder CattleReceipts 9,838Last week 19,291Year ago 13,518
Slaughter CattleReceipts 968Last week 731Year ago 752

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 5.00 to 10.00 lower, except 1000-1100 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Feeder heifers 3.00 to 5.00 lower, instances to 10.00 lower. Moderate to good demand for steers and heifers, pressure on the feeder market this week from the volatility in the cattle futures contracts. Cash fed cattle traded higher, up to 187.00, but the contracts for the summer Live Cattle months are only in the 170s. Turnout time is basically here now, keeping demand red hot for those cattle in light enough flesh to run on grass as a yearling. Cattle feeders are much more cautious in their approach to the feeder market, than the backgrounders are, as the Live Cattle contracts continue to disappoint them. Widespread rain the last week has grass green and growing, drier and warmer weather needed to get corn planting going again. Slaughter cows and bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
