Compared to last week: Few feeder cattle auctions this week as late week auctions did not host feeder cattle sales as the Independence Day holiday was nearing. Too few feeder cattle offered to make price comparisons with last week’s much larger offering. Cattle feeders in the north were able to keep the cash fed cattle market at 126.00, much higher than what the market was in the southern plains. Corn futures shot higher as the drought continues to rage across the western Corn Belt. Cattle feeders are still feeling more hopeful for the coming months in the fed cattle market as the current price structure of the board is attractive and driving feeder cattle purchases to fit those months. Cattle producers are trying to keep their stock turned out as long as they can but producers in the driest parts of the state have no choice but to pull cattle off early and send them to town. The hay crop is much lighter than normal, some producers wont’ have any to cut and bale, and the current price is higher than what can be justified to feed a cow. Wheat is being cut and baled, which will help those producers stretch their feed supplies while they adjust their cattle numbers down to what the range will allow this year. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls 5.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
