Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers steady to 5.00 higher, instances of 6.00 to 7.00 higher on steers 900-950 lbs. Very good demand for yearlings again this week. There is great interest in feeding yearlings as the cash fed cattle market has stabilized, and even managed to get a little higher. Cash corn remains very cheap, many locations are bidding under 2.60/bushel with new crop supplies looking to be large again. Cattle feeders really need some cattle that stand a chance of making some money and they would much rather gamble on a yearling compared to a calf. The yearlings require so much less management as they just go right to the bunk and never miss a beat. The yearlings placed now also come ready at a time of year where available supplies are much more limited than when the calf fed cattle reach finished weights. As the futures contracts have held together much better than expected there is more optimism now that things can continue to get better. Auction sales remain sporadic yet as most auctions are only seeing big sales every other, or every three weeks. This schedule also helps to create an active market as cattle feeders come to the sale that day and they are ready to buy cattle as they might miss out that week if they don’t act now. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
