Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 4.00 lower except instances of 5.00 to 6.00 lower on 500-550 lbs. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 5.00 lower, few instances of steady. Moderate to good demand this week for feeder cattle, the best demand remains on light fleshed and light weight steers and heifers that can work for backgrounding, much less demand for the heavier weight cattle to finish as the lower cash fed cattle market and much lower structure of the CME Live Cattle futures contracts really has pressured the feeder cattle market. We are entering the time of year where fed cattle numbers will be the tightest and the cash fed cattle market can't hold above 120.00, there is great concern that the market will recede to last year's levels again this summer which was devastating for cattle feeders as financial losses were large. Cattle feeders want to buy cattle but they need to be able to hedge them against the board to have some price protection, that has proven to be difficult. The cash feeder market has still been fairly strong considering all of the bearish market factors hovering over it, the CME Feeder Cattle Index is just above 140.00 but the front futures month is around 136.00. Quite a few consignment cancellations at midweek as an arctic cold front moved in and the temperature dropped to 20 below zero Thursday morning. Larger receipts expected for next week as the temps warm up and allow producers to get their cattle hauled to town. Slaughter cows and bulls 2.00 to 5.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
