Compared to last week: The feeder cattle market was extremely uneven as the sales that were held Fri Aug 9 were dollars higher than the sales held on Monday due to the drastic futures decline that started on Monday. Overall, feeder steers and heifers 3.00 to 8.00 lower except steers over 850 lbs that sold on Friday Aug 9 were 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Demand began the week good to very good but by Monday cattle feeders were rattled and fearful of what would happen in the cash fed cattle market after the annoucement of a fire at the Holcomb, Kansas Tyson beef plant. This annoucement caused a mass exodus out of futures positions, both Live Cattle and Feeder Cattle. Monday saw the board locked down the limit and Tuesday followed that up with expanded limits that quickly locked down. Feeder Cattle contracts fared better and by Wed made a huge move higher but with this type of volatility cattle producers were not willing to offer feeder cattle for sale leaving only two reported sales for the reporting period. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 lower, bulls 3.00 to 4.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
