Compared to last week: Feeder steers traded very unevenly, under 800 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher, 800-900 lbs steady to 5.00 lower, over 900 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher except 1000-1050 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers 3.00 to 5.00 higher with instances of 7.00 to 10.00 higher on 600-650 lbs and 850-900 lbs. The market on steers was extremely uneven as early in the week cattle feeders were willing to give more money for yearlings but by midweek as the futures complex continued to struggle they took a slower approach in their pursuit of feeder cattle. The competition is great for light fleshed yearlings but cattle feeders are also cautious not to get cattle bought with an unrealistic breakeven, according to what the futures contracts are estimating the coming months will be. Receipts were light this week yet still more cattle than the same week last year. As the feeder cattle market rose in the last few weeks backgrounders got the opportunity they were waiting for to sell cattle at a level where they might actually breakeven which has resulted in more cattle offered for sale in the auctions than is normal for late July/early Aug. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
