Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 900 lbs 3.00 to 8.00 higher, over 900 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 650 lbs steady, 650-900 lbs 5.00 to 12.00 higher, over 900 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Demand good early week but turned more moderate by late week as the CME Live Cattle futures refused to follow the cash market higher and instead moved lower along with the Feeder Cattle contracts. Cattle feeders secured a major victory in the fed market last week when they held out for higher money. But the futures contracts would not support this new found optimism. Corn was lower for the week but local producers can see the unplanted acres and the uneven stands and are skeptical that traders in Chicago have a better feel for the upcoming harvest than they do. Because of these factors cattle feeders backed off somewhat in their pursuit for feeder cattle as the week progressed. Flesh was a major price determining factor, even more so than usual. As costs of gain have increased dramatically, and the fear of corn going much higher, along with outgoing fed cattle losing money cattle feeders are hesitant to get stuck with a load of cattle that look to be inefficient gainers. Packers had to pony up and give steady money this week but the lack of a rally in the futures market is keeping a brake on the feeder market. Slaughter cows steady, bulls sold with a steady to lower undertone compared to last week's very light test.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
