Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 650 lbs sold with higher undertones, too few last week to make accurate comparisons, over 650 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 lower with a few instances of steady to 1.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs 1.00 to 2.00 higher, over 600 steady to 3.00 lower. Demand light to moderate, best demand for light weight and fleshed cattle for backgrounding much more moderate for those bound for finishing yards. Cattle feeders have been very defensive as the futures markets pummeled them again this week. The eroding futures complex carried into a lower cash fed cattle market as well as packers quickly lowered their bids and cattle feeders accepted them. Corn futures have gained nearly 40 cents in the last week, giving cattle feeders more concern about buying feeder cattle that will turn out to be too high when they come market ready. Flesh condition hasn't been too heavy, but cattle feeders are very selective and trying to buy cattle that will convert quickly and easily and they simply can't afford to take on more risk on a downward market. By Thursday the futures finally posted a gain of just over 1.00. The rains continue across the state, giving a positive outlook for grazing this summer once it warms up and the grass can finally take off and grow, this has helped to support the feeder market. Overall attitudes have been very negative as the futures contracts imploded at a time when market ready supplies are still very managable in the north. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher, instances to 4.00 higher on Lean cows, bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
