Note: This reporting period for this report has changed from a Monday-Friday range, now from Friday-Thursday, in order to align uniformally with the National Feeder Cattle Summary Report.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00 to 6.00, with instances to of 7.00 to 10.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 650 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, over 650 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Good demand for light weight and fleshed cattle suitable for backgrounding, moderate at best for cattle only suitable for finishing. As the futures markets rapidly deteriorated, which pulled the cash cattle market lower as well, cattle feeders have had to change their plan for buying feeder cattle. This negative tone of the market has come as a shock to producers as this is the time of year where numbers of fed cattle are the tighest in the north. More plentiful supplies of market ready cattle in the south have allowed packers to buy cattle lower early in the week, which has occured the last several weeks, making it very difficult for northern cattle feeders to maintain any leverage. Cattle feeders have struggled with profitability all year and now with the futures 12.00-14.00 lower over the last couple of weeks it has forced them to figure breakeven prices much lower than previously anticipated. Flesh condition has really been uneven in the auctions, the strictly hay fed cattle are very green and at times rough in appearance as the winter was long and hard which carried into spring. The cattle that have been fed in yards are in much heavier flesh and also carrying quite a bit of tag as the pen conditions have been very sloppy and muddy due to the weekly rains and cool temps. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls steady to firm.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
