Compared to last week's light run, steers calves under 700 lbs sold 8.00 to 10.00 higher, over 700 lbs sold steady to 1.00 higher. Heifer calves under 700 lbs sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 700 lbs sold 1.00 to 4.00 higher. Demand was good for bawling calves and yearling feeders. Larger supply than last year, as many cow/calf producers are selling calves 45 to 60 days earlier than normal due to very dry, short pasture conditions in a large portion of the state. Steer calves are bringing 30.00 to 35.00 per cwt more than same week last year. Nebraska feedlots are getting underway with irrigated corn silage chopping. Many will pack large piles of silage to help offset the short hay supply across the region. Then farmers/feedlots will seed rye grass or another fall crop so cattle can graze on these fall irrigated pastures for additional cheap gains. Feedlot trade might have been a little disappointed as feedlots couldn't hold a steady market. Live sales sold .50 to 1.00 lower from 145.00 to 148.00 and dressed sales sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower from 232.00 to 233.00. But the live market is still 5.00 to 8.00 higher than the Aug live cattle board.
