Compared to last week: Feeder cattle were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Demand was mostly good for very light offerings. Quality this week was mostly plain to average. Many unreportable, blemished cattle continue to be seen, especially on yearlings and long weaned summer calves. Cutting bulls continue to sell on very good demand as buyers search for bulls suitable to cut and make steers and competed with buyers looking for bulls to test and turn out with cows. The internet remains very active with several buyers noticed. CME feeder cattle positions saw another very volatile trading week. However positions did improve over the previous week, but remain short of the all time high set on June 10th. Market activity this week was mostly active with good buyer participation noticed. Weigh up cows sold on good demand for light to moderate offerings. Slaughter cow demand was mostly moderate to good and stronger than last week as this was the last opportunity for packers to buy cows prior to the 4th of July holiday. No sales are being held this coming week due to the holiday. Breaking cows sold mostly 2.00-5.00 higher, boning and lean cows sold 4.00-6.00 higher. The majority of the cow offering continues to be purchased to feed, however a larger portion was purchased for immediate harvest this week. Feeding cow demand was very good. Canadian cow feeders remain a large player in all auction markets pushing packer buyers to own high quality feeding cows. High quality high yielding feeding cows sold steady to 1.00 higher, with a large buyer pool of feeding buyers noticed. The volume and quality of cows are both starting to go down as most ranchers have branded and have cows turned out on summer pasture. Cow quality this week was mostly average to attractive, but overall not as attractive as last weeks offering. Slaughter bulls sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher as packers showed strong demand for bulls for immediate slaughter. Several feeding bull buyers remain active in the market and helped keep thin fleshed lower yielding bulls steady. Feeding bulls sold mostly steady to 1.00 higher. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold mostly 10.00-15.00 higher on a very high quality offering. One large consignment of very high quality 2 and 3 year old cows which lost calves were seen this week. These offerings were met with very good demand. Quality this week was mixed from plain to very attractive. High quality offerings sold on very good demand and helped improve the price of other offerings as buyers used them to fill loads. Slightly blemished offerings continue to be purchased to feed, many of these offerings were slightly blemished in some way (short tails, slightly long toes, etc.) Buyers have been buying cows up to 6 years old as replacements over the past few weeks. Demand from feeding buyers was very good, especially for heavy weight, fleshy offerings which buyers could blend on market ready loads.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
