Compared to last week: Only two sales were held last week as auctions continue with summer sale schedules. Feeder steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend, yearling heifers sold with steady to weak undertones in a narrow comparison. Demand remains good despite light offerings. Quality this week was mostly plain to average and mostly offered in small packages or as singles. Flesh conditions continue to be light as most offerings were coming off grass. CME positions floated sideways and ended the week very close to the previous Fridays close. The September contract closed Friday at 251.85 while the October closed at 254.65. Market activity this week was mostly active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for light offerings. Packers opted to send the majority of cows to immediate harvest again this week. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to weak on breaking cows. Boning cows sold 1.00-3.00 lower. Lean cows sold 2.00-5.00 lower. Feeding cows sold mostly 2.00 to 4.00 lower in a narrow comparison. Cow quality was significantly lower this week as many sets of cows sold out of country decimated by grasshoppers. The yield on many of these cows was significantly lower than anything seen since last spring. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 1.00-2.00 lower. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed were too lightly tested this week and last to develop any market trend. Quality this week was mostly average.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
