Compared to last week: Steers calves under 400 lbs sold mostly 5.00-7.00 higher, 400-499 lbs sold 5.00-15.00 higher, steer calves over 500 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed. Yearling steers sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher. Heifer calves under 450 lbs sold mostly steady to 10.00 higher, heifer calves over 450 lbs sold generally steady. Yearling heifers under 800 lbs sold unevenly steady, yearling heifers over 800 lbs sold mostly 1.00-2.00 lower. Quality this week was mixed from plain to very attractive. Yearling offerings were notably not as attractive as the week prior. Calf offerings were mostly attractive to very attractive with several load lots of calves seen. Demand for calves and yearlings was moderate to good. Many small packages of yearlings were seen this week. This forced buyers to piece together loads. CME positions traded sharply higher on Monday and spent the week slowly giving up most of the profits seen Monday. The August feeder contract settled on Thursday at 159.45, 0.425 higher than last Friday. The September contract closed at 164.65, 0.85 lower, while the October closed at 168.425, 0.80 higher. Market activity this week was mostly active. Weigh up cows sold on mixed demand for heavy offerings. Cows continue to sell 3 different ways as they are being purchased for slaughter, feed, and to return to the country to test for breds. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-4.00 higher on breaking cows as feeding buyers pushed these offerings higher. Boning and lean cows sold mostly 1.00-3.00 lower. The majority of the slaughter cow market was comprised of low yielding cows as most were coming out of dry country and had freshly weaned calves. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher as pressure from rebreed buyers helped push high quality cows higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 1.00 lower. Bull yields remain near their seasonal low. Weigh up conditions were mostly below average this week on cows and bulls. Demand for replacement stock remains good. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold generally steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
