Compared to last week: The best test for feeder steers and heifers was 650-699 lbs which sold mostly 3.00 to 7.00 lower. All other weights of

feeder cattle were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noticed. Quality this week was

mostly plain to average and lower than last week. Cattle were mostly offered in small packages or as singles. CME positions posted positive

gains throughout the week as packers paid higher prices for live cattle. As of Thursdays settlements May closed at 130.275, and August at

138.15 which is 13.175 and 11.65 higher respectfully from last Thursdays close to this Thursdays close. Demand was mostly light for light

offerings. Buyers were reserved as they bid on cattle this week due to lower quality and limited offerings. Market activity was mostly slow.

Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for moderate offerings. Packers were very aggressive as they bid on cows for immediate harvest

this week. Packers purchased even high quality, feeding type cows for harvest this week. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher on

all classes. Feeding cow buyers continue to pick around the edges this week as they attempted to buy cows away from packer buyers. Feeding

cows sold mostly 1.00-3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm in a narrow comparison. Cow and bull quality was mostly average to

attractive this week. Weekly beef slaughter was higher this week for the first time in weeks. Slaughter through Thursday was 323,000 head

compared to 301,000 head last week and 477,000 head last year. Young age cows suitable to feed or re-breed sold mostly 3.00 to 5.00 higher

with good demand seen for high quality re-breed type cows this week.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
