Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold unevenly steady. The majority of the auctions and volume occurs early in the week and most of those sale were fully steady to slightly higher but towards the end of the week lower futures did weight on some auctions and instances of weak to slightly lower prices were seen. The fall run is in full swing and the chant of the auctioneer could be heard long into the late hours of the night at many barns around the state. A heavy supply of feeders made the trip to town this week and ended up being the third largest volume week of the calendar year to date. Plenty of cattle of all weight classes provided buyers good opportunities to fill any orders they held. On top of cattle physically sold at barns another 5400 head was sold on Thursday by video auction at Joplin Regional Stockyards. The monthly cattle on feed report will be released on Friday afternoon; pre-report estimates have on feed numbers at 101.8, marketings at 100.1 and placements at 90.9. Prior to this month’s report year to date placements are 3% below last year, however since June placements have been 7% higher than last year. October is normally the largest month of the year for placements but that trend is not expected to hold true this year. Many light weight cattle were placed since June due to drought conditions this summer in many parts of the state which forced several cattle to be sold earlier than normal. Boxed beef cutouts are higher for the week with choice closing Thursday at 237.70 up 11.72 and select 213.89 up 4.43 compared to last Friday. As of this report feedlot trade for the week has been just under 95K head. Sales have been steady with live sales reported at 106.00-110.00, mostly 110.00 and dressed sales at 170.00-172.00, mostly at 172.00. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 8251 head with a weighted average weight of 553.80 and a price value of 150.32, 1.03 higher than last Friday.
