Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves mostly steady to 3.00 lower, yearlings traded steady to firm, on comparable sales. This was a light receipts week, mostly blamed on the increased precipitation throughout the state. Some areas got freezing rain and some snow while others saw flooding, making it difficult to transport cattle. In feedlot trade, there were some live purchases in the north from 100.00 to 104.00 and at 106.00 in the southern plains. A few dressed sales were reported from 158.00 to 163.00. The futures markets were able to hold their own, as outside markets took a tumble this week. Live cattle futures closed on Thursday 2.92 to 4.40 higher, when compared to last Friday. Feeder cattle futures were 2.93 to 6.07 higher, compared to last Friday. The October contracts saw the minimal gain, as they are set to expire on Friday. We are starting to look towards holiday demand in the coming weeks. Cutouts closed on Thursday at 207.32 and 191.23, for Choice and Select, respectively. They were able to gain back some ground Thursday, essentially erasing the losses from Tuesday and Wednesday. Last week’s Cattle on Feed report showed 104 percent on feed, 106 placements, and 106 percent marketed. The on feed inventory totaled 11.7 million head as of October 1; the highest inventory since 1996, when the series began. Net placements totaled 2.17 million head and marketings totaled 1.85 million head. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 2,742 head with a weighted average weight of 545.16 lbs. and a price value of 143.57, 0.44 higher than Thursday and 2.23 higher than last Friday.
