Compared to last week, feeders were very uneven with most selling in a range of about 2.00 on either side of steady. Locally there was a lot of variance in the markets and some of this was undoubtedly weather related. Cold rains came which changed over and had about half the state seeing the first snow of the year and heavier snows in neighboring states temporally affected transporting cattle. Temperatures have been near 20 degrees below average and many other states have now had a hard freeze which should help the market on some of the calves that have been considered so high risk the last month. It appeared some buyers were waiting and ready to get some wheat grazers bought as there was a few groups of light weight calves that sold with pretty respectable tickets. Although we have not talked much about it corn harvest continues to lag as of the latest report harvest is about 20 percent behind the five year average in the state. Iowa is in about the same shape with Nebraska fairing a little closer to average this has delayed many of the farmer feeders from showing up at barns so far. Yearlings continue to see the best demand and this is simply a case of fundamental supply and demand as they are somewhat hard to find at this point in the year. The USDA's Cattle on Feed Report, released last week didn’t end up with any huge surprises, compared to a year ago, showed Inventories 1 percent lower, Placements 2 percent higher and Marketings 1 percent higher. As of this report feedlot sales have been limited as of this report with some live sales mostly at 112.00 and a very small handful dressed at 174.00. Boxed beef cutouts were sharply higher as of Thursday’s close with choice 6.74 higher at 232.18 and select 6.65 higher at 206.49 compared to last Friday. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 4281 head with a weighted average of 552.04 lbs. and a price value of 150.20, which is 1.25 higher than last Friday
