Compared to last week, weaned calves under 600 lbs. sold mostly steady, unweaned or fleshy calves sold 2.00 to 6.00 lower, yearlings sold steady to 3.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with a few less yearlings and a few more calves, many of the unweaned bawling variety, in the offering this week. Demand for feeders was totally dependent upon what came in the ring. Long time yearlings, even those that were bought 3-400 lbs. ago put together and maybe not of the upper most quality will attract all the attention and in many cases bring more per cwt currently than calves weighting 2-300 lbs. less. Those bawling unweaned calves have very little demand and having a very difficult

time of finding someone willing to take on the risk of trying to keep them alive and prices are seeing heavy discounts before they are finding anyone willing to take a gamble. Temperatures have been a bit below normal this week and a strong cold front is forecast for next week which should help straighten many of these calves out and likely see several more orders for wheat grazers to develop. The monthly cattle on feed report is due out Friday afternoon pre report estimates have on feed numbers at 99 percent marketings and placements at 101 percent compared to last year. As usual the big unknown is placements which have a large range of estimates from 95-107 percent. Boxed beef cutout values showed gains this week as of Thursday’s close choice was at 225.62 up 7.58 and select was reported at 199.09 up 6.05 compared to last Friday. Some moderate feedlot sales were reported on Thursday with live sales reported from 108.00-111.00, sales were mostly in the south which would be 1.00 to 2.00 higher than last week. A few dressed sales were reported in the north from 174.00-175.00 which would be mostly steady. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 3915 head with a weighted average of 542.14 lbs. and a price value of 148.95, which is 2.68 lower than last Friday.
