Compared to two weeks ago: Moderate to good demand for this large offering of high quality steers and heifers in light to moderate flesh. Many long strings offered as full loads and mulitple load lots of steers and replacement worthy heifers. The market was most active on the light fleshed cattle that could go to summer grass, and for replacement heifers with many bidders on the internet actively bidding on these heifers, more moderate on the cattle suitable only for finishing. There were several cancellations due to the heavy rains received in the area this week that created very muddy conditions making it difficult to ship cattle to town. The rapidly declining cash fed cattle market and much lower futures contracts has forced cattle feeders to figure their breakevens at much lower prices. Futures contracts finally found firm ground today and posted good gains but much uneasiness remains in the minds of producers. Next feeder cattle auction will be May 24, 2019.
