Compared to last week: Steer calves under 450 lbs were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed, 450-599 lbs sold mostly 4.00-6.00 lower. Yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Heifer calves weighing under 400 lbs were too lightly tested to trend, however higher undertones were noticed; heifer calves 400-499 lbs sold mostly 5.00-8.00 higher; heifers over 500 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower; Yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Demand this week was mostly moderate for heavy offerings. The best demand was seen for steers weighing less than 475 lbs and heifers weighing less than 525 lbs suitable to run on grass. Demand for feedlot ready calves was light to moderate as many locations in the corn belt are still wet. Additionally, many farmers are still tied up with harvest as late plantings have led to a later than usual harvest. Quality this week was average to attractive on all calves on offer. Many buyers showed little to no interest for calves with only one round of preconditioning shots. The biggest price gaps between preconditioned and non preconditioned calves existed in grass cattle as very few takers could be found for calves with only one round or no shots. Market activity this week was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on very light to moderate demand for heavy offerings. Packers opted to send the majority of offerings to feed this week. Slaughter cows sold on very light demand as seasonably heavy cow volumes have severely diminished demand for cows for immediate harvest. Slaughter cows sold sharply lower with most sales 10.00-15.00 lower on boning and lean cows. Breaking cows sold weak. Feeding cows sold mostly 6.00-10.00 lower. The best demand for cows was for large frame or fleshy cows which packers or feeders could feed to premium white. Slaughter bulls sold 10.00 lower. Re-breed cows sold with higher undertones.
