A medium size crowd was on hand for the Central Missouri Show-Me Select Bred Heifer sale held at South Central Regional Stockyards. 94 head from 12 consignors averaged $2121/head with a top of $3000. Demand was moderate to good compared to the sale last May which averaged $1829/head. The bullish state of the feeder market and stage of the cattle cycle are probably supportive of even higher prices but buyers of replacement cattle are riding the brake to some extent as the current outlook for hay and forage production is unfavorable and may well lead to an overall reduction in cow numbers in this area before the snow flies again.
The sale was coordinated by the Show-Me Select Board with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Heifers in this sale have met minimum standards for reproductive soundness, pelvic size, muscle thickness, body condition and weight. They have undergone a comprehensive health program and are guaranteed bred with a percentage fetal sexed. All heifers are mated to calving ease bulls and are expected to calve from mid August to early November. Heifers were graded and sorted into uniform lots according to projected calving dates and body type.
