Sponsored by Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers, Inc., University of Missouri Extension, Missouri Cattlemen's Association, MU College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Livestock Market Association, Kirksville Livestock LLC, and Missouri Department of Agriculture.
All heifers in the sale have met minimum standards for reproductive soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. A strict immunization program has been followed including Brucellosis calf-hood vaccination and tested negative for BVD-PI. Heifers were bred to bulls meeting strict calving ease/birth weight EPDs. Projected calving dates were given with most heifers expected to calve from the end of January through early April. All heifers were screened for blemishes, muscle, frame, body condition score (BCS) and disposition by a screening committee consisting of official graders from the Missouri Department of Agriculture and USDA, then sorted into lots according to calving dates and similar body types.
It was a rainy night outside, but a good crowd was still on hand to see the 126 heifers that sold in 38 lots. Most of the consignors are usually long time participants of the Show-Me-Select Heifer Program, but this year a couple of new area producers took part, and sold some really nice replacements through the auction. Buyers were a little more cautious and looking for quality, as everyone knows the cattle market has tumbled this fall and the outlook may not be as bright as it was just a short time ago. That being said, the sale average was still 2693 .00 per head which was 613.00 higher than a year ago.
