Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves sold 4.00-8.00 higher with spots 12.00 higher. Peewee Calves sold 10.00-20.00 higher. Demand was good on a moderate supply. The largest draft of the day was 70 head of 663 lb. heifers which brought 368.00/cwt. One stick-out draft was 19 head of 703 lb. replacement quality heifers which brought 387.50/cwt. The USDA's Cattle on Feed Report, released Friday, had Inventories at 98.4 percent, Placements at 90 percent and Marketings at 86.3 percent. The report was perceived as neutral since the numbers came in as expected. On Sunday, the US Secretary of Agriculture announced that the border will remain closed indefinitely due to the New World Screwworm continuing to be an issue in Mexico. The cattle futures erupted on Monday with feeder contracts up the limit. Cash prices responded by being sharply higher on Monday and continued that upward movement on Tuesday.
