Compared to last Tuesday, feeder steers and heifers steady. Slaughter cows 1.00-3.00 lower. Demand moderate to good. Supply moderate. Feeder offering mostly lighter cattle weighing 650 lbs and down. A special cow sale followed the feeders with several bred cows and a few pairs. The upheaval in the industry caused by labor shortages at many processing plants is continuing with the 3+ week backlog of cattle now over 500,000 head. No one knows how much deeper the hole gets but even from here it looks like a long slog through some elevated carcass weights as the constraints of demand and packing capacity will make it much harder to catch up than it has been to get behind. On the bright side, Friday's Cattle on Feed report supported the notion of a late summer/fall marketing hole with March placements 23 percent below a year ago. which may help us to get current if we haven't before then. The choice cutout was sharply higher again Tuesday rising to an unheard of $330.82, zero of which producers are participating in with fed prices 30.00/cwt lower than a year ago.
