Northern Livestock video auction conducted its annual Summertime Classic sale over the past three days. At the outset of the week, demand for cattle ranged from good to very good. However, by the conclusion of the third day, demand had tapered to mostly moderate. This shift resulted in notably wide price spreads, as buyers sought ways to adjust to lower CME positions and consequently reduced break-even points. Furthermore, elevated corn prices intensified these challenges for buyers, with CME corn contracts rising sharply and concluding Wednesday's trade at a seven-week high. Despite these market fluctuations, ranchers continued to benefit from prices at or near historic highs. Many calf prices remained well above last year's contracts for comparable calves and yearlings. Demand for replacement heifers was very good as buyers pushed heifer prices above steer prices at times. Heifers sold with the best demand this week as feeding and replacement buyers both competed over high-quality offerings. Yearling cattle sold on mostly good demand. Canadian and American buyers were both active as they pushed to fill pen space. Many sets of yearling heifers were purchased by Canadian buyers and in some cases the spread between yearlings steers and yearling heifers was very tight. A larger volume of PO's was noticed this sale as lower prices led some producers to po or differ their cattle to the August sale. Market activity was active throughout the three-day sale with bidders participating rapidly in person, by phone, and via the internet. Calves weaned for more than 45 days were sold untagged, with most scheduled for November or later delivery. Cattle designated as "Value Added" were enrolled in two or more certification programs and verified by a third party. The premiums seen for value added cattle were historically light with some lots seeing little to no premium this sale. Cattle for current delivery are set to deliver within 14 days of the last day of the sale, or August 5th, 2026.
