Northern Livestock video auction held their Annual Early fall preview sale today offering just under 33,000 head of calves and yearlings. Demand was very good throughout the sale. Ranchers received the highest bids on their cattle so far this summer as cattle prices pushed higher yet again. Unweaned commodity steers weighing from 500-649 lbs for October delivery sold mostly 25.00-31.00 higher on average than the July sale. Offerings were light to moderate as many sold cattle earlier this summer. Tight supplies of cattle continue to drive prices higher. Demand for heifers was very good as replacement buyers pushed all heifer prices sharply higher. No comparisons can be made on feeder heifers as too many were purchased for replacements to develop an accurate trend on feeders. A large section of the sale was specifically devoted to replacement heifers and demand for this class of cattle was as very good as ranchers look to rebuild herds. Demand for lightweight calves suitable to develop into yearlings was also very good, especially for lightweight cattle that deliver late in the year or early in 2026. Weaned calf prices were very good this sale as most buyers showed modest premiums for cattle weaned over 45 days. Weaned premiums were noticeably higher this sale compared to the July sale. Yearling demand was very good, however offerings were mostly light as last months sale had a heavy offering of yearling cattle. No PO's were seen this sale; a record for a summer video sale. Market activity was mostly very active throughout the sale. Bidders were active, bidding rapidly, ringside, over the phone, as well as over the internet. Calves weaned over 45 days were left untagged. Most of these offerings sold for November and December delivery. Cattle tagged as Value added were enrolled in two or more programs and had to be verified by a 3rd party. The largest premiums given were for cattle sold as All Natural, NHTC and GAP combined. Current delivery cattle deliver before September, 1st 2025.
