Northern Livestock video auction held the Annual early Fall preview sale today and yesterday. Demand for feeder cattle was mostly moderate to good for moderate offerings. Demand for heavyweight weaned steers and heifers that delivered late in the fall was mostly good. These offerings offered strong, noticeable premiums to unweaned calves. CME positions fell off sharply over the last two days and all buyers took a step back and purchased all offerings lower than last months record high prices. 600-699 lbs feeders sold the closest to last months record high prices as 600-649 lbs steers for October delivery sold $4.00 lower on average compared to the July sale. Yearling demand was good, however prices were softer than last month. Demand for replacement quality heifers was mostly moderate to good. The bulk of heifers represented as replacement quality sold with only a slight premium to feeding quality heifers. Yearlings sold out of grow lots were tagged as fleshy as these offerings sold at a discount to true yearling cattle off grass. Bidding was mostly active throughout the day with a large crowd both ringside as well as over the internet. Cattle weaned over 45 days were left untagged. Most of these offerings sold for November-February delivery. The percentage of PO's was higher this sale as some buyers passed bids in hopes market prices will rebound going forward. Cattle tagged as Value added were enrolled in two or more programs and had to be verified by a 3rd party. The largest premiums given were for cattle sold as All Natural, NHTC and GAP combined. Value added premiums were not as aggressive this sale as many buyers report they have their pens full for this class of cattle. Market activity was active throughout the two day sale.
