Northern Livestock video auction held the Annual early Summer special sale today. Demand for all feeder cattle was very good for moderate offerings. Demand for heavyweight steers that delivered early was very good as buyers purchased these offerings to try and market against the April, rather than the June live cattle contract. Demand for high quality heifers was very good several sets sold for the same price as their steer mates. A large portion of high quality heifers were purchased to develop into replacements. Yearling demand was mostly good to very good. Several sets of yearlings sold out of grow lots this sale and most of these offerings were tagged as fleshy. These offerings sold at a discount to true yearling cattle off grass. Cooperate packer buyers were very active this sale as they pushed to own a large portion of the offering. Many sets of heavy weight cattle which delivered early were purchased by packer buyers. Canadian buyers were also very active as several sets of cattle were purchased to ship North of the border to feed. Bidding was very active throughout the day with a large crowd both ringside as well as over the internet. Cattle weaned over 45 days were left untagged. Most of these offerings sold for November and December delivery. The percentage of PO's was very light this sale as historically high prices were seen. Very good demand was seen for Value Added cattle that were 3rd party verified. Cattle tagged as Value added were enrolled in two or more programs and had to be verified by a 3rd party. The largest premiums given were for cattle sold as All Natural, NHTC and GAP combined. Cattle which were exclusively NHTC sold at a slight premium to commodity cattle. Market activity was very active throughout the sale.
