Compared to last week: Feeder steers 5.00 to 7.00 higher, heifers 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers. As the cash fed cattle market holds around 240.00, cattle feeders' outgoing fat cattle are very profitable, which is giving them the incentive to replace them quickly. The CME Live Cattle contracts remain steeply discounted to the cash trade, much the way it has been for the whole year. Fat cattle are not only reaching prices that seemed to be unobtainable, but are now able to hold at those levels during the time of year where fat cattle supplies are most readily available. Packers have seen their margins deteriorate as the boxed beef market drops sharply, but they have not been able to get leverage over cattle feeders and buy cattle cheaper. These facts are keeping the feeder cattle market at the auctions extremely active as new record prices continue to be set. Some grass yearlings are starting to be offered but still not many cattle moving in the auctions yet as barns stay on their summer schedules.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
