Compared to last week: Due to differences in flesh condition, feeder steers under 800 lbs not well compared, over 800 lbs steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 6.00 higher, with some instances of steady to 3.00 lower due to differences in flesh condition. Very good demand for feeder steers and heifers this week as more locations hosted their annual summertime BBQ special sales. There were long strings of yearlings on offer and there were plenty of buyers on the seats actively bidding and chasing the market to secure their feeder cattle needs. As the cash fed cattle trade in the north continues to outperform the southern trade and the June Live Cattle board, optimism continues to build. Cash corn was higher this week but that did not slow down the feeder market. Flesh condition is a major factor in how high a price feeder cattle can achieve, compared to others that are carrying too much flesh, the greener cattle draw much more interest from buyers, especially so during a time of high feed cost. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher, bulls 1.00 to 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
